Not many people know that baking soda can clean your hair perfectly, even better than your favorite shampoos. It is a natural ingredient that is healthier to use than shampoos, which contain a lot of dangerous chemicals such as 1.4-Dioxane (a suspected carcinogen), Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) (causes cancer, allergies and endocrine disruption). cocamidopropyl betain (a synthetic surfactant related to skin rashes and irritation) and Laureth sulfate (a skin and scalp irritant).
Shampoos contain fragrance as well which is made of several chemical ingredients. Shampoos strip our scalps of natural oils, which is why it’s better to use natural products for washing our hair. After switching your favorite shampoo for baking soda, you may notice that your hair is oilier than before, but this is perfectly normal as your scalp needs time to adjust.
A baking soda and vinegar shampoo is a cheap and easy way to clean your hair. Here’s how to prepare it:
Baking soda
Mix 1 part of baking soda with 3 parts of water. If your hair is at shoulder length, mix 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda and 3 times the amount of water in a bottle – adjust the amount depending on your hair length. Apply the mixture on dry or wet hair and work it towards the ends, then let it sit for a couple of minutes before rinsing your hair with water. After applying the baking soda mixture, you need to apply a vinegar rinse.
Vinegar rinse
Mix 1 part of white vinegar with 4 parts of vinegar, then add lavender, peppermint or rosemary essential oil in the mixture to neutralize the vinegar smell. You can prepare a bigger batch of the mixture and use it when you need it.
To apply it, tilt your head back and distribute it evenly through your hair. Wait for a few seconds, then rinse with cold water.
